Our first project of the year has been writing our class constitution, to determine how our classroom will be run.
After brainstorming what makes them feel safe, supported, and happy in a classroom, students were broken up into small groups to share what they thought a well-run classroom should look like. These small groups were then jigsawed to make new groups, where students attempted to develop different branches and rules of a government that would meet the needs of all students.
For inspiration, we looked at parts of the U.S. Constitution, and learned about Greek and Roman systems of government.
One Friday, drafts of each section were posted for feedback from the group.
This week, groups will incorporate feedback on each section before we assemble and proofread the constitution as a whole.
We hope to ratify the constitution, and put our class government into place before leaving for the weekend!
