Book Group Mondays

Every Monday we meet for book groups.

After an initial book tasting, students were placed in groups of 2-4 students to read either To Kill a Mockingbird, Monster, The Outsiders, or Red Scarf Girl.

Each group meets with a teacher for about 30 minutes to discuss the text.

Each book deals with issues of social justice, which fits nicely with our whole school theme of Human Needs, and looks at a society that is deeply segregated in some way.

While these book groups are teacher-led, our hope is to transition to student-led book groups as the year progresses and students become more adept at having meaningful discussions about literature.

So far, conversations have been rich, and students have had so much to say about the text that half an hour hasn’t been enough. It’s a lovely way to start our week!
