What Do You Value?

Today we spent Health and Wellness talking about our values.

We began by discussing what a value is. Articulating this was not easy! While students were able to give many examples of values that they held, pinning down the difference between a value and something that was valuable was difficult! Eventually, we decided that a value is a “belief that you hold about what is important and how you should act.”

We then broke up into groups and held a “values auction”. Each group of students was given $500 and a chance to plan how they would spend their money. Then, the bidding began!

Students bid on the values that they thought were most important to a well-functioning society. They had to prioritize which values were most important, and decide just how important, and how much they were willing to spend on that value.

Bidding lead to some strong emotions, and a few disagreements, that gave students a chance to practice flexibility and self-regulation. It was also a lot of fun!

A highlight was when “family” sold for $300- the highest bid of the day!

In a future class, students will work to imagine a society where the only values are those that they won. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
