This week we finished reading our book group books, and launched into an investigation of themes within them.
On Wednesday, students met with their book groups to make a mind map of themes in their books, and to make connections between our class and whole-school themes.
Today, we started to work with Ms. Camilla to create a book cover that creatively conveys a major theme in their book. This is an ongoing project, that students will work on over the next few weeks.
Today we explored typography, and how to creatively convey information through text. Below are a few examples that students looked at:
Then, students chose a single word related to their book to experiment with. This could be a word in the title of their book, or thematic topic.
In future classes students will explore other features of graphic design, like color and image choice, as they design their book cover. Ultimately, students will write an artist statement where they explain what themes they uncovered in their books, and how the artistic choices they made communicate this theme. We love ending book groups with projects like this, as they allow students to express themselves in multiple mediums, and ask them to think symbolically.
