Some of what we’ve been doing over the last few weeks:
Reading and Writing Myths

Over the past few weeks students have investigated myths from other cultures and asked “What can we tell about a culture from the stories they tell?” Today, we moved to examine a story from our own culture and asked “Is it a myth”? Students then did a quick-write where they attempted to write their own myth to convey a value from our society.
Playing Games

Playing games together builds community and helps students build social skills and learn to manage conflict in a structured way. Each day as students trickle in from recess they have 5-10 minutes to play a game as a whole class before we start our afternoon meeting. About once a week we introduce a new game and agree on rules as a group. So far, we have three games that they can choose from- “Night at the Museum,” “Four Headed Expert,” and “Charades”. As the year goes on we will build our collection of games, and our bond as a community!
